Reminders that we're here

At least a few days a week, I see (and hear, oh goodness, do I hear) military jets flying overhead as I sit outside on campus, attempting to soak in some Vitamin D. It makes me wonder... are they American military aircraft? It seems likely. The other night, while talking with a friend at the Mexico party, he told me that there is a small town near Trier with a many Americans from a nearby base.

I have to wonder... what are the aircraft doing up there? What is their purpose? Are they going somewhere, returning from a foreign land? Are they merely patrolling or practicing?

Whatever their purpose or reason, they always serve as a reminder that we Americans are everywhere, sticking our fingers in everything. It remains to be decided whether this is good or bad... or in which cases, how I feel about it.

The US military clearly has nothing better to do, as I was told multiple times that they're dropping supplies for a bunch of spoiled alcoholics while watching the new season of the Real World/Road Rules Challenge. Yes, yes, trashy, trashy Kelda. However, I couldn't help thinking each and every time someone name-dropped the army, "Really? You guys seriously don't have some...army stuff you could be doing? Is that really the best use of your time and resources? What about all those guys and ladies still hanging out in Iraq? No? Well, it's your army." So flying around Germany is pretty on par then.

PS: I started a new blog with my friend Mike. We review horror movies and drop tidbits of info like bombs. Bombs of LOVE.

American soldiers have been and remained in Germany since WWII. Yes, the USA does have our fingers in most everything and that is why we are also known as the world police that stands up for human rights and protects our country as well as helping others. So be proud of our country and proud of the countries that support us. That's enough from a pretty much non-political mom.

Neeein! Wie kannst du kein Geld haben!?!? Skandal!! :)

Guten Abend Amanda! I have enjoyed reading through your blog from start to end this evening. You are an excellent writer (& a good comedian too)! Maybe the military planes you're hearing are flying in and out of the large US military hospital (Landstuhl) in Germany? God knows there are plenty of injured military troops needing the facility.
Good, I'm glad you asked about recipes. I collect cookbooks and am always looking for a good excuse to search through them. You say you have electric burners? No crockpot?
I found it interesting earlier in your blog journal that you were exhausted from hearing and speaking Deutsch. I hope that feeling has passed for you now. Soon enough you will be speaking and conversing (and dreaming) in German without any thought about translating from English. Have faith, you will feel right at home soon. Good Luck with your school work at the university and keep up the interesting blogs and pics. Warm regards, Karla Green, Fergus Falls, MN
